About the Hillel of San Diego Graduate Program

The Graduate Student Program of Hillel of San Diego serves Jewish graduate students throughout San Diego. Hillel provides a Jewish connection on campus and helps graduate students to connect to the broader Jewish community.

Culture

From concerts to museum visits, Hillel facilitates participation in cultural events of interest to Jewish graduate students. Hillel recently organized an outing to hear the Israel Philharmonic; over 40 Jewish graduate students purchased tickets at a low group rate subsidized by Hillel.

Holidays

Hillel is an important resource for graduate students during the Jewish holidays throughout the year. In addition to regular Shabbat dinners and services, Hillel offers Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, Sukkot events and sukkah-building on most campuses, Chanukah celebrations, Purim parties, and Passover seders.

Israel

Hillel helps students develop a meaningful connection to the people and state of Israel. In the face of anti-Israel activism and rising anti-Semitism on university campuses, Hillel students serve as the voice of the Jewish community on campus in standing up for Israel and the Jewish people.

Law Students

Hillel supports Jewish law student groups on three law school campuses in San Diego: University of San Diego, Thomas Jefferson, and California Western. These groups provide a Jewish connection on law school campuses and plan several social events for Jewish law students every year.

Learning

Hillel organizes graduate student attendance at lectures given by prominent Jewish thinkers who visit the San Diego Jewish community. In addition, Hillel provides graduate students with formal and informal opportunities for Jewish learning.

Networking

Hillel offers access to an extensive network of Jewish professionals in the San Diego Jewish community. Through social mixers, Hillel’s community board of directors, and partnerships with other Jewish organizations, Hillel helps students connect to the Jewish community.

Outdoors

Hillel organizes regular hikes in beautiful parks around San Diego. Regular hiking locations include Torrey Pines State Reserve and Mission Trails Regional Park. Picnic lunches are often provided by Hillel at no cost to students.

Shabbat

Grad students gather at least once a month for festive Sabbath dinners at locations around San Diego. These dinners are usually potluck-style events (all food is dairy or vegetarian).

Sometimes Hillel coordinates Shabbat dinners with other Jewish groups in San Diego.

Social Events

Regular happy hours and other social events provide opportunities for Jewish graduate students to meet new people, socialize with friends, and take a break from academic work.

Student-run Events

Hillel provides financial and logistical support to students who wish to plan an event for the Jewish graduate student community.

Volunteering

Hillel organizes community service projects geared toward graduate students, often in partnership with other Jewish organizations in San Diego.
